Sebastian, Florida
Located approximately halfway down the eastern coast of Florida, the City of Sebastian can be found in Indian River County along what is referred to as the “Treasure Coast.” As of the 2010 Census, the City of Sebastian was home to about 22,000 year-around residents.
The area of Florida where the City of Sebastian is located has long been known as the Treasure Coast because in 1715 several Spanish ships loaded with treasure encountered a storm off its shores and were lost. Despite efforts by both professional and amateur treasure hunters, it is estimated that only a portion of the sunken treasure has been found to date. The value placed on the treasure lost from the 1715 fleet has been estimated at over $500 million.
During the latter part of the 19th century, the town of Sebastian was a fishing village. In the early 1880s David Peter Gibson and Thomas New settled in the area. Sebastian was officially founded in 1882 and named St. Sebastian, after Saint Sebastian. Later, “St.” was removed from the name of the town, but not from the river. Sebastian was incorporated as a city in 1924.
The City of Sebastian boasts beautiful parks as well as an unobstructed view of the intra-coastal waterway in the Indian River Lagoon along its dazzling riverfront district. Residents and visitors alike also enjoy close proximity to Atlantic beaches and a year round average temperature of 73.4 degrees. Several festivals each year, monthly arts and crafts shows, concerts in the park, and a municipal golf course also keep residents entertained. Nearby Pelican Island also owns the distinction of having been declared the United States’ first National Wildlife refuge in 1903.

As your life evolves, we are committed to ensuring that your estate plan evolves along with it.
For an estate plan to be successful it requires a solid foundation. That foundation, however, also requires continuous and careful nurturing. With that in mind, your estate plan is not something you create and forget about once it is in place. Instead, your estate plan is something that will need to be reviewed and updated throughout the course of your life as your estate and your family grows. Initially, your focus may be on nothing more than ensuring you do not leave behind an intestate estate should something happen to you. As such, a Last Will and Testament may be all you need in the beginning. Deciding to marry and/or become a parent, however, will change that as you now have a family to protect and provide for in your plan. At that point, you may decide to create a trust to protect your minor child’s inheritance, for example, as well as incorporate incapacity planning into your overall plan. As you move into middle age, you should begin merging your retirement plans with your estate plan to ensure that the two plans work in harmony with each other. Long before you reach retirement age, however, you should also consider adding Medicaid planning to your estate plan to ensure that you can afford the high cost of long-term care. Funeral planning along with advance directives should also be included in your overall estate plan if you want your wishes to be honored with regard to end of life medical treatment. At Kulas & Crawford, we would be honored to be with you throughout your life’s journey to help ensure that your estate planning needs, wishes, and objectives are fulfilled.
